So today I had to run to the store to get a birthday present for one of Connor's friends and as he is taking his time picking out a gift, Chloe, decides it is the opportune time to start screaming like a Banshee that she wants to "buy something" reinforced by shoving the penny she found in my wallet in my face. As I'm trying to get her to stop screaming and explain to her that a penny is not enough to buy a baby doll and that we had only brought enough money to get what we came for she starts the typical preschooler mindset that its her way or the highway. So here I am trying to hurry Connor along, Chloe is screaming I want to pull my hair out and then I start getting the looks. You know the ones. From the other people around you when you are trying your hardest to diffuse a situation that scream just buy it for her, or the my kids would never dream of acting like that looks.
I'm sorry but nobody is perfect. And all I know is from personal experience is that often times those parents that give you the huffy, my kids would never do that look often times are the parents of that screaming child but are also the ones that cave and give that child whatever they are throwing the fit about. I have a friend that does this. In conversation she will play perfect Mom, but when faced with the real life situation of a fit throwing child she caves in seconds so now her kid throws a fit nearly every time she takes him to the store now.
So I try not to let the looks get to me but seriously who enjoys being judged? this is only the second time Chloe has ever thrown a fit like this and I do everything I can to hustle us out of the store as quietly as possible as the cashier is chuckling because she knows exactly how I feel. Either way I felt embarrassed but at least I won the small battle that I didn't bust out the credit card and buy Chloe the doll she was throwing a fit about and Bret and I used the experience to at least TRY and teach Chloe that there is value to money and not every coin can buy something on its own. She may not have completely grasped the concept but she is only 3 after all.
